Wrinkles on the forehead
Written by Jessica Tapia, MD
Have you ever found yourself in front of a mirror and wondered: What happened? Where did these wrinkles come from? At Juvenalia Brío, we believe that most people after age 25 have had a moment like this.
That's why we decided to write this article that we hope will be useful to learn where those forehead wrinkles come from, why they appear and what you can do to prevent or even reduce these marks of time.
Although wrinkles and expression lines show the passage of time, the smiles, surprises and worries we have lived through, you may not like the way they look, so how about keeping the memories of life but maybe not the wrinkles. In addition, we will provide you with tips and solutions on how to remove forehead wrinkles.
The ABC of smooth skin and forehead
We can imagine our skin as if it were an elastic band full of strength. With the passage of time and use, this elastic loses its strength. In the case of our skin, we are talking about the loss of collagen and elastin.
Some pretty rough uses that have an impact on our skin include for example finishing a movie marathon on Netflix until the wee hours of the morning (hello lack of sleep) or going to the beach or a picnic without putting on sunscreen. These types of events are what our wrinkles love to attend. But, with a few tweaks to our skincare routine, we can make sure wrinkles aren't invited.
Let's start with the basics: moisturize and protect our skin. Moisturizers and sunscreens act as a dynamic duo that works together all the time to prevent wrinkles.
The best moisturizers and sunscreens contain ingredients such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and bakuchiol that are part of a group of ingredients that we call in aesthetic medicine: anti-aging. In addition, these products are essential to eliminate wrinkles and maintain a smooth and youthful forehead.
Suppose you want to give your skin extra love. In that case, our patients at Juvenalia Brío have obtained excellent results from various treatments we offer, such as Botox, microneedling, and Fillers. The best thing about these treatments is that they are non-invasive, allowing you to continue your everyday life immediately.
Are you ready to say goodbye to forehead wrinkles?
By adding the following tips and treatments we are about to touch on, you can open the door to a new stage, one where you feel in control of your well-being.
Remember: Every skin is unique, so what works for one person may need adjustment for another. The important thing is to listen to your skin.
The truth behind forehead wrinkles
An important concept to understand is that our faces tell the stories of our lives, and each gesture, each frown or smile, leaves its mark.
These wrinkles appear due to the loss of collagen and elastin, two proteins that keep our skin firm and elastic.
The sun and chronic stress also play a role in this process. And if you're the type who can't help but express yourself with your entire face, expressiveness can lead to wrinkles forming on your forehead and other areas, noticing these life marks (also known as furrows) a little earlier than others.
So, what can we do to prevent or reduce these wrinkles?
Strategies to prevent the formation of wrinkles
Some simple and minimally invasive strategies may provide safe and consistent results in the long-term prevention and correction of forehead wrinkles.
Let's look at each of these strategies in detail.
Deep hydration
An indispensable step in controlling your forehead wrinkles is to ensure your skin is always well-hydrated. A frequent question our patients have asked us is:
How does deeply moisturizing our skin help prevent wrinkles and fine lines?
To answer this question it is important to understand that deep hydration usually requires the use of products containing hyaluronic acid. This substance goes into action by plumping the skin and increasing its volume and suppleness because it manages to absorb water in a way that no other substance does. As a result, by achieving deep hydration, the expression lines that bother us so much are diminished.
On the other hand, when we do not give our skin the hydration it needs, our skin loses its elasticity so our wrinkles become more visible.
So, remember: good hydration from an early age is your best ally in keeping wrinkles under control and preventing new ones from forming.
Protection against UV rays
Chronic exposure to UV radiation is one of the most common causes of forehead wrinkles, which form and intensify over time.
You may have noticed that people exposed to the sun all day long, perhaps because of their job or because they live on or near the beach, tend to show more wrinkled, dry, and even sunspotted skin.
These effects occur due to the loss of collagen and elastin generated by the sun. Therefore, we always recommend our patients to apply sunscreen daily, in fact, every 4 hours, to protect their skin.
We recommend using a sunscreen SPF30 or higher to protect the skin from UVA and UVB radiation in the exposed area. In addition, combining sunscreen with vitamin C can enhance sun protection and maximize the antioxidant benefits of vitamin C.
Stress management
Managing stress can be one of the most challenging tasks, but it can help you prevent wrinkles from forming.
Less stress can relax your facial muscles, and you can avoid repetitive gestures contributing to wrinkles, such as frowning and forehead furrowing.
Several relaxation techniques can help reduce stress and, as a result, prevent wrinkles. Meditation and deep breathing techniques, for example, can relax facial muscles.
In addition, facial massages before bedtime can be an effective technique to relax facial tension, which can also result in better sleep and potentially reduce the appearance of wrinkles. There are also aesthetic medicine treatments such as dermal fillers, Botox, hyaluronic acid, laser and radiofrequency that can help remove forehead wrinkles.
Facial Massages
Facial massages can help prevent wrinkles by activating the circulatory and lymphatic systems and stimulating collagen and elastin production, resulting in a firmer, more luminous face.
Note: A facial massage of 10 minutes a day is enough, but it is important to be constant in this practice to start noticing results on the skin.
Skin Patches
These patches adhere to the skin and provide many benefits that can help reduce wrinkles.
Skin patches have a low risk of irritation and can help prevent wrinkles and expression lines on the forehead.
Non-invasive alternatives
Although forehead and frown lines may be a concern after age 25, not everyone is willing to undergo a minimally invasive medical procedure to treat them.
Fortunately, several non-invasive alternatives can help.
Radiofrequency, phototherapy y microneedling are examples of non-invasive treatments that can help fight forehead wrinkles.
These treatments can offer effective results without a lengthy recovery period, making them an attractive option for those seeking a non-invasive treatment.
When to Consider Botox and Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
In spite of the advantages of non-invasive treatments, at Juvenalia Brío we believe that in the long term, the Botox and Skinboosters with hyaluronic acid offer something that other treatments cannot: safe, consistent and long lasting results.
Botulinum toxin injections, commonly known as Botox, are a non-surgical treatment that relaxes muscles and reduces wrinkles. The temporary effects last 3 to 6 months.
In addition, the recovery time for these treatments is very short; for example, in the case of Botox, the only post-treatment care required is that you do not lie down or lower your head for 4 hours.
We always recommend that Botox injections be administered by an experienced physician trained to minimize and manage possible complications.
All of our doctors at Juvenalia Brío receive extensive training and specialize in aesthetic medicine, so if you decide to have a treatment with us, we guarantee that you will be in good hands.
Skincare Routines
Incorporating these tips and treatments into your daily routine may seem overwhelming. But don't worry, let's break down how to create a comprehensive skincare routine to prevent and reduce forehead wrinkles.
Cleansing and exfoliation
The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing and exfoliation. Next, we will discuss how these first stages of skincare help prevent wrinkles.
Exfoliation is an indispensable step in any skin care routine, especially in the context of combating the effects of aging, as it prepares the skin to absorb any substance or product you may apply to your skin.
As for frequency, the suggested frequency varies with age; weekly may be adequate for younger skin and 2-3 times per week after age 30 to keep the skin free of dead skin cells and more receptive to treatments.
Overnight skin nutrition and repair
After cleansing and exfoliation, nourishing and repairing the skin is important.
At Juvenalia Brío, we recommend that any repairing treatment be applied at night since the skin enters a state of regeneration where the damage of the day is repaired, and cells are renewed.
Therefore, using retinol products at night can help stimulate cell renewal and collagen production.
What about...?
-
Expression lines on the forehead result from skin aging, repeated muscle contractions, stress, and anxiety. As the skin ages, these lines appear as one of the first signs of aging.
-
Wrinkles on the forehead appear mainly due to repetitive facial movements, the loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin, and exposure to factors such as stress, ultraviolet rays, genetics, and tobacco consumption.
-
It is important to avoid prolonged sun exposure, use sunscreen, consume foods rich in Omega 3, and use products suitable for your skin type.
